TWO-FACED COMPANION: Is Computer Technology a gift or a curse?
Man, I don't know about you, but I think I've only been looking at one of the so-called two faces of computer technology. From what I can recall, since the day I started using computers, it has been nothing but a blessing to me. If I consider the experience of others, however, I could say this subject is...well, subjective.
It might be because I use computers well and wisely that I have never tasted its wrath. I have never been a victim of cyberbullying, hacking, scamming, and all those deceitful and threatening operations. Refrigerators and other such types of computers do malfunction at times but I see those as my own fault for not maintaining them enough. Function and malfunction alike considered, I still think computer technology is a gift to humanity. Whenever I need something, I just know there's a certain computer technology for it that makes it easier, faster and more convenient.
The curse side of using computer technology, in my opinion, would be if the users become too addicted or too dependent on it. At that point, it doesn't just become a curse to the user, but to the people who are important to the user as well. I have witnessed mothers yell at the top of their lungs, veins on the neck pulled taut in the pressure, because their sons and daughters would rather keep their noses stuck on to their phones than to their lecture notes and books; or than help in household chores. Dependency is also one thing — I was quite taken aback that there were actually people who didn't know how to interpret analog clocks because they had been so used to digital clocks.
Simply put, it depends upon the person making use of computer technology, particularly, how they use it. As of now, to me, it is a good thing — a gift, and I hope it stays that way.
